COLLABORATION

  • How will you facilitate an authentic collaborative learning experience to promote deeper student engagement with content skills and concepts?
Students will demonstrate authentic collaboration through the development of a single group paper based upon a current theme of concern of their own choosing. The paper will be required to reflect the contributions of every group member and each written contribution will have to be a minimum of 250 words. Moreover, students will have to utilize critical-reading and critical-thinking skills in their discussions and critique of sources for the group paper. Further, students will have to apply these critical analysis skills to the content as they collaborate on the composition of the paper, including the position(s) they might present in the paper.
  • As members of collaborative groups, how will you support students’ efforts to identify solutions to the problem you are using as the framework for your PBL instructional unit?
Students will be introduced to the Google Docs which will function as the collaboration client for them to enable their application of critical analysis skills in order to develop a group paper. Docs will provide the technology to support their constructivist approach to collaboration. In addition, students will apply critical analysis skills to the reference materials and resources in the collective formulation of the project document. To support students in their approaches to possible solutions, assignments will require input and or feedback from every group member in order to achieve the learning outcomes.
  • What criteria will you use to assign learners to collaborative groups, including a rationale? What will be the size of the collaborative groups you will include in your unit?
The criteria to assign students to groups will be the scores on the New York State English Regents examination. Groups will be comprised of a mixed level of five learners according to their test scores. The rationale for this is to foster the development of group discussions which form an intellectual watering hole wherein. Thus, the high level and low level learners will be exposed to one another’s ideas as they navigate and negotiate their way to a group paper. Bloom’s taxonomy will be the criteria to both guide and critique student content.
  • Which digital tools and websites are you considering for collaboration in your unit?
Google Docs will be employed as the platform to allow collaboration among students in groups. Spruz will be used as the platform for educational networking between students and this instructor. Also, Spruz can accommodate multi-modal learning objects from both students and this instructor which would contribute to the project and learning outcomes.
  • How will you assess participation of the students in their collaborative groups? (In Module 4, you will create assessment rubrics in which you will include this element.)
Student participation will be assessed through a weighted peer review document to be completed by each group member. In addition, this instructor will score the group work product according to the rubric.
